A teacher not only polishes students' intelligence but also plays an important role in building pupils’ character. To acknowledge and pay homage to teachers, October 5 is recognized internationally as World Teachers’ Day to observe the adoption of the 1966 UNESCO Recommendation Concerning the Status of Teachers across the globe.

Beaconhouse Group - the largest international network of private schools, paid tribute to all teachers who continued their services and fulfilled responsibilities amid pandemic through its campaign ThankYouTeacher.

The campaign encouraged everyone, from kids to parents to Beaconhouse graduates, to use the hashtag #ThankYouTeacher to share a memory or a photo of their favorite teacher.

The campaign pointed out the impressive character of teachers who invest their hearts and souls towards the academic nurturing and learning of their students. The most recent example of such sacrifice can be seen during the pandemic crisis in which teachers engaged their students. They did their duties tirelessly in the most difficult conditions.

During COVID-19, teachers across the globe emerged as the unsung heroes, in fact superheroes who continued their work under immense pressure. It is now our duty to fully support all teachers in the education recovery process. Time to invest in them and give priority to them.

TEDxLahoreWomen: Let's Get Inspired By Bold & Brilliant Women Of Pakistan!

The TEDxLahoreWomen is a platform to meet and greet the inspiring ladies of Pakistan who achieved their goals despite hurdles. It is a place to recognize the unbelievable work championed by Pakistani women in all fields. It aims to create safe spaces where women and girls can come together to share ideas, co-create and expand their communities.

This year, the British Council in Pakistan collaborated with TEDxLahoreWomen to support women through culture, programs, research and partnerships across Pakistan. The British Council collaborates with partners from different sectors to influence legislation and policy that promotes gender equality – in some cases at the local level and in some others at the national level.

The theme of the event was something that really resonates with great achievers among women; Bold & Brilliant TED Women 2019. The platform provided space to those shining ladies who took extraordinary risks and moved forward like true innovators. The TEDxLahoreWomen event celebrated the pioneers and those who tirelessly working and showing up as allies and advocates.

At the Bold & Brilliant event by TEDxLahoreWomen, the inspirational women shared their inspiring and motivational stories to encourage the next generation of young women – and men. So that their talks and performances will boost the confidence of others to think about what we as a community can do to shatter glass ceilings, challenge stereotypes and start new conversations on how we can best support and champion women in Pakistan.

Dr Aneela Darbar, a neurosurgeon, shared her experiences with the audience that people ask her about her profession: is neurosurgery more difficult than rocket science? People also ask her, if it pays a lot. For her, the real question is: does it save lives? It does, and it doesn't.

Another wonderful speaker Amna Zamir, the Additional District & Sessions Judge from #GilgitBaltistan talked about the hardships faced by her in a male-dominated society as well as a profession and how she created a space for herself in the system despite the obstacles. Zamir told audiences that "Determination, hard work and confidence of a woman can defeat the odds."

"When I wanted to study law in college I was told to choose another degree because it would be hard for a woman to travel to Islamabad or Peshawar. I told my father if I can't study law I won't study anything at all. I did it." said Amna Zamir.

The singer and pediatric doctor Masuma Anwar who got international fame because of her Sufi songs and Coke Studio performances, said, "The tenor and timber of my voice was compared to male singers. I didn't care about the memes and was proud: yes, I stand shoulder to shoulder with the best male singers out there."

The TEDxLahoreWomen emphasized that discriminatory social attitudes, beliefs , and social norms can negatively affect women's and girls’ empowerment. It is important to share positive women's attitudes to encourage other women. Such an event helps to understand, explore and influence change in attitudes, as well as foster opportunities for influencing social norms in the longer term.

President Arif Alvi Applauded CSR Initiatives of OICCI Memebers In Pakistan

President Dr Arif Alvi who was the chief guest at CSR exhibition titled, “Impactful Journey: OICCI CSR Exhibition”, highlighted the need of creating greater awareness about fighting the new challenges of climate change. He urged country’s corporate sector to play more useful role in this regard.

Dr Arif Alvi was addressing the members of the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) at an Exhibition of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) at a local hotel. He further added,

 “It is great to learn about the huge impact of foreign investors in social uplift across the country and about their efforts to improve the lives of our fellow countrymen, the ones who are not as privileged as others.”

The President appreciates the role of OICCI members for social change in Pakistan, “it is important that the private sector joins hands with the government to develop the marginalized communities of the country and in this respect I am thankful to the OICCI member companies who have demonstrated their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility projects that are helping our communities”.

He told audience that government is taking strong measures to create an improved environment for business community that would result in more investment in the country.

The president referred to the newest World Bank report that listed Pakistan among the top 20 well performing economies. He pressed the country’s corporate sector predominantly the overseas investors to support and contribute in the government’s efforts for bringing social change by meeting the challenges such as health, education, malnutrition.

President of OICCI Shazia Syed while addressing the participants remarked that OICCI member companies are committed for the improvement of the communities in Pakistan. She highlighted the ‘OICCI Women’ initiative, launched in 2017, which aims to bring all the OICCI members under one umbrella in order to make concerted efforts to achieve inclusion and diversity. The ‘OICCI Women Empowerment Awards’ was launched in 2018 to recognize the top performing OICCI members.

Syed also mentioned that OICCI members, during the last one year alone, have collectively invested over Rs5.5 billion to create a positive impact on the lives of 58 million people across the country.

She also extended full support from OICCI platform to the government on its “Say No to Plastic” initiative since it’s a long journey to overcome the threats of plastic to the environment. Syed also informed the audience that CSR activities were spread all over the Pakistan with 32% of the CSR activities focused in Sindh, 27% in Punjab, 15% in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 10% in Baluchistan, and another 16% in FATA, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

Secretary General OICCI, M. Abdul Aleem, highlighted “Our member companies have contributed to social services, in the field of education, healthcare, community development, environment and infrastructure development.”

Amir Adnan & Huma Adnan Will Showcase At The DIL Gala Of Life

Amir Adnan and Huma Adnan will be exhibiting their collections in a solo fashion at the DIL Gala of Life, on November 11th, 2016 in San Francisco.

Pakistan’s lead choreographer, Imran Kureishi will direct the exciting show. Amir Adnan and Huma Adnan will be showcasing their signature collections that retains an aura of ethnic mix, for the upcoming season.

Speaking about the DIL event, the dynamic duo states, “We are really excited to be coming to the DIL gala. We are very happy and honored to see expats and Pakistanis living abroad that support Pakistan so dearly. We are looking forward to see everyone who comes out to support this cause”

The Developments in Literacy (DIL) is an organization working for the education and empowerment of underprivileged students, especially girls. DIL is operating student-centered model schools; and providing high-quality professional development to teachers and principals across Pakistan.
